Catch a Runaway

2
It was Roger's birthday. His family was giving a big party for him. All his friends had come. They had brought him many gifts. But there was one gift that he liked most of all. It was a brand-new camera. And this camera could print its own pictures, too!
Roger put the camera up to his eye. He pointed it at some girls who were jumping rope. He was about to snap the shutter But just then there was a loud crash. There was a sound of smashing metal. Everyone stopped in his tracks.
3
"It's an accident!" someone yelled. "Come on! Let's see!"
Roger and his friends ran into the street. Two cars were in the road. One of them was smashed in on one side. The driver of the car looked dazed and hurt. But the other car had backed away. It was not going to stop! The engine roared and the tires screeched The car made a sharp turn. Then it drove off.
Roger moved fast. He aimed his camera at the car. He snapped a picture of it just as it raced down the street. Less than a minute passed. Now the photo was ready.
4
Soon a police car and an ambulance came. A doctor took care of the hurt driver.
The policeman talked to the crowd. "Who saw the car that got away?" he asked.
Before anyone could say a thing, Roger rushed up "Look here!" he said. And he gave his photo to the policeman. The picture was clear. It showed the car that had sped away. It was easy to read the license plate on the car.
5
The policeman ran to his patrol car. He called the station on his radio. He gave them the number of the license plate. And he told them what the car looked like. Then he came back to Roger.
"That was good work," he said. "Your photo will help us catch that driver soon."
Roger grinned, but he felt shy "I just did what I thought I ought to do," he said.
