A Garage for Gabriel
by Jane Thayer

2
There was once a little car named Gabriel. He lived outdoors in a lot where used cars were sold. He wore a sign that said FOR SALE-CHEAP. There were dents in his fenders. His paint was rusty. His doors sagged.
Oh, thought Gabriel, how I wish I were bright and shiny. And how I wish I had a garage!
One day two old ladies came by. They said to the car salesman,
"Have you a small car?" He pointed to Gabriel.
"We'll try it," they said. In they climbed.
3
Whiz, whiz, whiz went Gabriel around the block. But the ladies said, "We don't want this car. It goes too fast."
Next came a college boy.
"Here's a fine car," said the car salesman
Oh-ho! thought Gabriel. This time I'll go very slowly Then maybe the boy will buy me and give me a garage So he went v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y.
But the college boy said, "This car's too slow!" And off he marched.
4
Soon a young lady came I'll show her I've got pep in my engine, Gabriel thought.
The young lady started the engine "BANG!" shouted Gabriel "BANG, POP, POP!"
"This car's much too noisy!" the young lady said. And off she hurried.
"Oh, dear!" whispered poor Gabriel. "I'll never be noisy again " So the next day when a man came and pressed the starter.
Gabriel didn't make any noise-not any noise.
This car won't even start," said the man. He turned and left.
5
Now Gabriel was sure that he'd never have a garage And then Jimmy and his dad came along "Have you a car for fifty dollars?" asked Jimmy's dad.
The car salesman was very angry at Gabriel He said, "Yes-there's one for you!" "Sold'' said Jimmy's dad.
Gabriel was so surprised that he didn't even show off He just acted natural
Jimmy's dad drove Gabriel up the street and stopped in front of a little yellow house.
6
Then he greased Gabriel's engine till it purred like a cat He hammered out the dents in the fenders and fixed the sagging doors. And he gave Gabriel a coat of bright red paint.
"I feel good, and I look fine!" shouted Gabriel.
Then Jimmy and his dad and mother took Gabriel for a drive.
And when they came home, they drove right to a little yellow garage -- just for Gabriel.
