Factoring a GCF is the reverse of distributing.

What is the GCF of the expression below?
 $12ab^2+20b$  

 $12ab^2+20b$  

The GCF is  $4b$  because both terms can be divided by  $4b$  .

Now, "undo" the distributive property by factoring out the  $4b$ .

In factored form,  $12ab^2+20b\ =\ 4b\left(3ab+5\right)$  

Check your work by distributing.  $$4b\left(3ab+5\right)$$
