Simile

A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind. Similes use the words like or as.

Simile in Two Roads

"My heart is pounding like a drum as we wait for the signal." (page 8)

Metaphor

A metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to make a comparison between two things that aren't alike but do have something in common.

Metaphor Example

The ballerina was a swan, gliding across the stage.

Personification

Personification is when you give an animal or object qualities or abilities that only a human can have. Personification is what writers use to bring non-human things to life.
