• states that to multiply a sum or difference by a number, multiply each term inside the parenthesis by the number outside the parenthesis

• Variables Example: a (b + c) = ab + ac

• Variables Example: a (b - c) = ab - ac

• Numbers Example: -2 ( 3 +4) = -6 - 8 = -14
