• Ser is used to talk about where people are FROM - Their origin. (where they were BORN)

• Estar is used to talk about where people/things are LOCATED NOW.

• They both mean "to be"

• When conjugated, they both mean "I am, You are, She is, He is, We are, They are, Y'all are."

• So, you have to know the SITUATION - origin or location, to pick the right verb! They're NOT interchangeable. :)
