Delhi
Delhi, the capital of our country, has a long history. People have been continuously inhabiting Delhi since the 6th century. However, it did not become a major city until the early 12th century. During the 12th Century, the Chauhans conquered the city of Delhi, Defeating the Tomara Rajputs and transformed the city into an important centre of commerce.

In 1192 , Prithviraj chauhan was defeated in second battle of Taraori or Tarain (near Thanesar in present-day Haryana). After this defeat , Delhi for the first time , came under the Muslim rule , which was established by Muhammad Ghori.In 1206 , Ghori appointed one of his generals , Qutubuddin Aybak , as the governor of Delhi.

Dynasties
Between 1206 and 1526 , Delhi was ruled by several Muslims rulers. They all preferred the title 'Sultan'.

Slave Dynasty
Delhi sultanate started with the slave dynasty (1206-1290) . The first founder of slave dynasty was Qutubuddin Aybak. After his death , his son-in-law Shamsuddin Iltutmish took over the throne. Before his death , Iltutmish passed on the throne to his daughter Raziayya , since she proved herself to be better than her brothers. She was the only woman ruler who ruled over Delhi. Then the next ruler of Delhi sultanate was Ghiyas-ud-din-Balban who was the chief advisor of raziyya , he was the last ruler of slave dynasty.

Khalji Dynasty
The first ruler of Khalji dynasty (1290-1320) was Jalaluddin khalji. He was succeeded by Alauddin khalji , an excellent administrator , who influenced many rulers of the successive generations. In 1316 , the death of Alauddin khalji brought an end to the khalji dynasty , this was the shortest dynasty.

Tughluq Dynasty
The tughluq dynasty (1320-1414) was established in the early 13th century by ghiyasuddin Tughluq. He ruled the Delhi until 1342 CE and was succeeded by his son Muhammad Bin Tughluq. In 1351 CE , after his death of Muhammed Bin Tughluq , Firoz shah Tughluq took over the throne. The tughluq dynasty became weak after the death of Firoz shah. In 1398 , Timur came to India from Central Asia. He attacked and plundered the country. Delhi was in ruins after his attack. He appointed Khizr Khan as the governor of Multan and Sind before leaving India. Later , Khizr Khan founded the sayyid dynasty.

Sayyid Dynasty
When Khizr khan founded the sayyid dynasty (1414-1451) , which ruled over Delhi from 1414 to 1451. After khizr khan's death in 1421 , the rule of the sayyid dynasty was taken over by Mubarak shah. After the death of Mubarak shah , the dynasty did not last for long.

Lodi Dynasty
In 1451 , the lodi dynasty (1451-1526) was established by by Bahlul lodi , who was an afghan noble. He expanded his empire by invading the neighbouring states. After him , his son Sikandar lodi took over the throne and shifted to the capital of Agra. Sikandar Lodi was succeeded by Ibrahim lodi in 1517. He could not gain the support of the Afghan nobles who were fighting among themselves for power.The nobles wanted to overthrow Ibrahim lodi. Finally , Daulat khan lodi who was the governor of punjab and the uncle of Ibrahim , invited babur to invade India.
