Citizenship is an important concept. It means that a person owes allegiance (loyalty) to a country and expects protection from that country. Citizens have certain rights and responsibilities.

7

The rules for citizenship differ from country to country. Here in the US, there are two ways to become a citizen.

  • birth

  • naturalization

8

A person is a US citizen by birth if at least one of the following is true:

  • born on US soil (includes military bases and embassies)

  • both parents are US citizens when the person is born

  • one parent is a US citizen who has lived in the US for a specified length of time

9

Naturalization is the process of gaining citizenship other than by birth.

Before a person can apply to be naturalized as a US citizen, they have to meet qualifications like legal entry into the US; residence in the US for a specified amount of time; passing a test that includes English, US history, and US government; and taking an oath of allegiance to the United States. Naturalization is a voluntary process.

10

Naturalization is a legal proceeding that is done in a court. The people pictured here are taking the oath of allegiance to become citizens of the US.

We believe that individuals should have as much individual freedom as possible. We also believe that the government should actively guarantee and protect that individual freedom.
