Präteritum Weak verbs follow this pattern:

• Chop off the -en

• Replace with -te (this form works for ich-er-sie-es

• if the subject is different, add the appropriate ending!

The Umlaut Rule

Modals are weak verbs, but get rid of the umlaut when you make it Präteritum!
