The simple past is used to talk about actions that started and ended at a specific time in the past. It is also used to talk about past facts and generalizations that are no longer true in the present.


When forming the simple past, it is important to remember that there are two types of verbs: regular and irregular.

  • An irregular verb: was

  • Six regular verbs: emerged, died, inspired, negotiated, urged, imprisoned.

  • A subject pronoun: he

  • An object pronoun: him

The simple past tense of regular verbs is formed with -ed.

There is no regularity in the formation of the simple past of irregular verbs.
