SIMPLE PAST? WHAT IS IT?

The simple past is used to talk about actions that started and ended at a specific time in the past. It is also used to talk about past facts and generalizations that are no longer true in the present.

When forming the simple past, it is important to remember that there are two types of verbs: regular and irregular.

SIMPLE PAST - ABOUT THE TEXT...

• An irregular verb: was

• Six regular verbs: emerged, died, inspired, negotiated, urged, imprisoned.

• A subject pronoun: he

• An object pronoun: him

SIMPLE PAST - REGULAR VERBS

The simple past tense of regular verbs is formed with -ed.

SIMPLE PAST - IRREGULAR VERBS

There is no regularity in the formation of the simple past of irregular verbs.

CREATING A SENTENCE IN THE SIMPLE PAST

To form affirmative sentences in the simple past, use the simple past form of a regular or irregular verb.

To form negative statements in the simple past, use did not (didn’t) and the base form of the verb.

For questions, use did before the subject and the base form of a verb.
