​Subject and Object questions

English is a SVO language, which means that its sentences follow a SUBJECT - VERB - OBJECT order.

​Subject Questions

​When a question is directed at the subject of a sentence, it is called a subject question.

​

To form a subject question, it is not necessary to use inversions or auxiliary verbs other than ones that are already part of the sentence.

​

​The verb in a subject question is always in the third person singular form.

​Object Questions

​Questions directed at the object of a sentence are called object questions.

​

Unlike subject questions, the object questions require questions inversions and auxiliary verbs.

​Examples

1. "Fábio is reading a book."

​Object Question: What is Fábio reading?

​2. "Duda has dark hair."

​Subject Question: Who has dark hair?
