Tips and strategies

Reading Portfolio Task 1 will contain Yes/No/Not given type of questions
We already practiced this type of question in class last week
3
What does each option (Yes/No/Not given) mean?
Yes = the statement agrees with the views of the writer
No = the statement disagrees with the views of the writer
Not given = it is impossible to know what the writer’s point of view is (topic not mentioned in the text)

Read and memorise these 5 top tips and answer questions afterwards!
1, Skim read the text for 5 minutes, then read the first question and select a keyword to search for. Find the keyword (or synonym) in the text.
2, Questions are in order of the text: the answer to the first question will be in the beginning of the text, the answer to the last question will be at the end.
3, There will be at least one of each answer type – Yes, No, Not Given. So, if you don’t have at least one of each when you’ve completed the test, you’ve made a mistake.
4, At least one answer will be 'Not given'.
5, The questions will contain synonyms (= different words) so do not look for the same word as in the question - look for the same meaning but different words.
11
Multiple Choice
The answer to the first question might be in the last paragraph of the reading.
Yes, this is possible
Not possible - answers to the first few questions will be in the introduction, not at the end
12
Multiple Choice
You should read and understand every single word in the text before you start answering questions
Good idea - it is important to understand everything
No - read only the interesting parts and leave out the boring details
You do not need to read the whole text, just look for keywords so you can answer the questions
13
Multiple Choice
You finished the test and all your answers are 'no'. What does this mean?
You made a mistake - there will be at least one 'yes', 'no' and 'not given' answer in the test
You are a very negative person that always says no to everything
The teacher that wrote the questions wanted to make it easy to mark the test
14
Multiple Choice
You finished the test and you only answered 'yes' or 'no' to questions. What should you do?
You should check your answers again - at least one answer must be 'not given'
You finished the test so you should just relax and listen to some music
15
Multiple Choice
'Not given' means
The statement is right (according to the writer)
The statement is wrong (according to the writer)
It is impossible to know what the writer’s point of view about this statement is; there is no information in the text.
16
Multiple Choice
The keywords in the question will be the same as the keywords in the text.
Yes, so it is a good strategy to look for the same word that is in the question
No - there will be synonyms = different words with the same meaning (for example: difficult / hard)
17
We will now do some reading practice!
You will read 3 paragraphs about exercise in schools, followed by questions.
18
Multiple Choice
"The evidence is crystal clear: physical activity is great for children. Researchers around the world agree that young people who are active have better brain function, higher self-esteem, more motivation and better school performance." - Question / Statement: Physical exercise can make children feel better about themselves.
Yes
No
Not given
19
Multiple Choice
"During the school day, children do not need to exercise for long periods of time. A review of studies published in 2011 found that short bursts of physical activity - 10 minutes or less - increased pupils’ attention in the classroom. Children who took short breaks for physical activity also performed better in school and displayed lower stress levels and better moods." Question / Statement: If children spend more than 10 minutes exercising, they will be too tired to study afterwards.
Yes
No
Not given
20
Multiple Choice
"What about linking physical activity with teaching? A review published in 2015 found that when children learn while moving their bodies, they perform significantly better on standardised tests. There are all sorts of examples of how to make this happen, such as doing jumping jacks while spelling words." Question / Statement: Children get lower marks in exams if they do physical activity in the classroom.
Yes
No
