The Talent Show

For the third year in a row, Mrs. Landers announced the name of the winner, and it was not Kendall. Instead of getting upset, Kendall began to think about what she could do for the school talent show next year.

Kendall practiced singing in the mirror nearly everyday. She practiced her tone, her pitch, and her dance moves. The night of the next talent show finally arrived. Kendall approached the microphone and sang with her heart and soul. The crowd cheered. When Mrs. Landers named the winner, it was Kendall.

Contractions

  • A contraction consists of two words that are combined to form one word. To “contract” means to “make smaller,” and that is what we do when we form contractions: we take two longer words and contract them into one shorter word.

  • An apostrophe is a type of punctuation mark. One of its jobs is to help us form contractions. However, many students put the apostrophe in the wrong spot, as in ar’nt. Understanding that the apostrophe must always take the place of the omitted letters will help prevent such errors.
