  • The First Continental Congress had sent King George III a letter demanding he repeal the coercive acts and let the colonists have a vote ( No Taxation Without Representation)

  • While waiting for his response the colonists organized militias and trained for battle

  • The king refused the demands, so the delegates held the Second Continental Congress

  • They knew war was almost certain and they could not rely on untrained militias. They needed an army

  • Militias only fought for a few months at a time. An army soldier could fight until the war was over

  • Congress decided to create the Continental Army

  • They would train these soldiers like the British had been trained

  • Congress needed a commander for the Army- A commander is the main person in charge of the army

  • Congress chose George Washington- He had experience from fighting in the French and Indian War

  • Washington rode to Boston to organize his army

Olive Branch Petition

  • Congress did not WANT to go to war. They just wanted fair treatment from the king

  • Congress made one last attempt at peace- July 1775, congress sent King George III the Olive Branch Petition

  • The petition was signed by many members of congress- It requested that the King help end the conflict

  • The king didn't even read it. Instead he sent more soldiers to the colonies

  • The colonial militia used this time to train like a real army

  • Washington sent Henry Knox to Fort Ticonderoga in NY. The Americans took this fort and its ammunitions from the British
