Steps in adding or subtracting mixed numbers

• 1 - is there a common denominator? If not, find a common denominator.

• 2 - Can you add or subtract the whole numbers first? If yes, do that.

• 3 - If the first fraction has a smaller numerator than denominator, convert it into an improper fraction first.
