Luther's 95 Theses & The Church's Reaction
Luther disagreed with the RCC's sale of indulgences and the power of the Pope
The Pope excommunicated Luther - expelling him from the Church
Luther refused to take back his statements and was made an outlaw of the Holy Roman Empire
Many nobles and German princes protected him & he gained many followers and believers. They became known as Protestants

Reminder: Indulgences were sold by the Roman Catholic Church to raise funds for the construction of a new church in Rome. Believers paid money to receive pardons from punishment for sins, allowing the sinner to enter Heaven faster.
