The Renaissance began in Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries and marked a "rebirth" of European culture. The key values were humanism, individualism, secularism, and a revival of learning and texts from Greece and Rome.

The Protestant Reformation Begins...

  • The Roman Catholic Church's power had been declining since the end of the medieval period

  • More and more Europeans began to question Church teachings and the role of the Pope

  • Some of these reformers would break with the Church and create new sections (denominations) of Christianity

Luther's 95 Theses & The Church's Reaction

  • Luther disagreed with the RCC's sale of indulgences and the power of the Pope

  • The Pope excommunicated Luther - expelling him from the Church

  • Luther refused to take back his statements and was made an outlaw of the Holy Roman Empire

  • Many nobles and German princes protected him & he gained many followers and believers. They became known as Protestants

Reminder: Indulgences were sold by the Roman Catholic Church to raise funds for the construction of a new church in Rome. Believers paid money to receive pardons from punishment for sins, allowing the sinner to enter Heaven faster.
