Multiple Choice

Question image

The term “frivolous” implies that the author

1

is fascinated by the endless capabilities on smart phones.

2

wants to see more developments added to smart phone technology.

3

has a smart phone.

4

believes that the average individual does not need a smart phone.

5

hopes that technology ceases to expand its scope.

5

“Frivolous” means useless or unnecessary.

This is based on the contextual description of trivial uses and knowledge. So if the author believes that individuals not involved in business are unnecessarily using smart phones, then the author would think that these people do not need smart phones.

6

Multiple Choice

Question image

What is the purpose of the conclusion sentence?

1

Draw a conclusion about what we know smart phones can do

2

Assume where technology is headed and how it will affect society

3

Comment on human connectivity through the use of smart phones

4

Predict how the government will regulate and guide future technology

5

Present two possible explanations for the growing popularity of smart phones

7

The conclusion sentence states two possible paths that could explain the arrival of a growth in smart phone popularity.

These two possibilities are guesses at what is causing this trend. Because the author injects minimal bias and leaves the answer to the reader’s interpretation, the author is simply presenting explanations.

The other choices are either irrelevant or insufficiently supported by text evidence.

8

4

The survival of Humanity

because the author talks about survival and the threats of annihilation.

10

Multiple Choice

Question image

1

Retreating from extreme danger.

2

Declare war on each other.

3

Advancing to the stage of war but not engaging in it.

4

Commit suicide.

5

Negotiate for peace.

11

Brink = the extreme edge of a cliff

The threat of nuclear war is compared to standing on the edge of a cliff, ready to jump, but not doing it.

12

Multiple Choice

Question image

In the author's opinion,

1

huge stockpiles of destructive weapons have so far saved mankind from a catastrophe.

2

superpowers have at last realized the need for abandoning the production of lethal weapons.

3

mankind is heading towards complete destruction.

4

nations in possession of huge stockpiles of lethal weapons are trying hard to avoid actual conflict.

5

there is a silver lining over the production of deadly weapons.

13

". . .the very nations which have spent incalculable resources and energy for the production of deadly weapons are desperately trying to find out how they might never be used."

The author clearly states the opinion of nations in possession of huge stockpiles of lethal weapons are trying hard to avoid actual conflict.

14

Multiple Choice

Question image

Irrepressible" in the second line means ______.

1

incompatible

2

strong

3

oppressive

4

unrestrainable

Science Strategies and Practice

30

Science Strategies

  • Use the process of elimination to find test answers more quickly when you’re undecided on how to answer a question.

  • If it is taking you too long to figure out an answer, either pick an answer option and come back to it if you have time OR skip it and come back to it later. It’s far better to move on to questions you can more easily answer than mull over those you aren’t sure how to solve.

  • Don't get distracted by an answer choice that is factually true, but doesn't answer the question. Focus on what the question is actually asking for so you don't accidentally pick an answer that is true but incorrect.
