Blackboard Observer Training/Q&A

Zoom with Casey Eubank - ITAS

4

Ideas, Concerns, Questions, Rumors

What's on your mind?

5

What is the Care Team Approach?

  • Partner with faculty, advisors, and other Learning Services departments to identify at-risk students

  • Proactively reach out to struggling students

  • Provide more than "band-aid" tutoring: incorporating academic self-management skill into tutoring

Holistic Tutoring Expectations

  • Help students understand the concepts in their homework; do not do their homework for them. Use similar examples to explain concepts instead of just working the problem with them.

  • Do not be BFF's with students, but do be sensitive to their needs. Limit sharing personal information/back stories with students; keep them focused on the task at hand.

10

Holistic Tutoring Expectations II

  • You are not expected to know the answer to every question , but you should be able to model the steps a successful learner would use to find solutions. If you aren't sure of an answer, show the student how you would Google it.

  • You are not expected to be an expert on every topic, but always try to help as much as you can. Sometimes what the students needs help with is Blackboard or some other generic system.

11

Holistic Tutoring Expectations III

  • Be prepared to show students more than just the answer to their question. Have go-to resources on time management, note-taking, test-taking, etc. These should be things that work for you; e.g. ticktick app, your own memorization technique, etc)

  • Take time to learn about other departments in the college so that you can refer students if necessary. Familiarize yourself with wsutech.edu, MyWSUTech, Navigate, and other tools and show students how to use them too.

12

Holistic Tutoring IV

  • Be proactive in reaching out to students

  • Look for ways to engage students in a positive way.

  • Find/Create new materials for use in the HUB and/or online in the Tutoring HUB folder in Blackboard

13

Multiple Choice

A student tells you she wants to drop her class, but she doesn't know what to do. How do you help her?

1

Show her how to find her advisor in Navigate or DegreeWorks

2

Tell her to go to the front desk

3

Ask her why she wants to drop her class

4

Have her email her instructor

14

What do I prioritize as a tutor?

  • Help any student that is physically present.

  • Use Blackboard Observer to track the students in classes assigned to you. Note grade increases or decreases after any special tutoring or HUB activities provided.

  • Email/text students with 75% or lower in their class asking them when they can meet with you. Coordinate study sessions if relevant.

  • Email/text students referred to you via Navigate.

  • Answer phone calls/emails.

  • Create/prepare handouts or online materials.

15

Tutor Tracking

  • Dawn Clark - ENG 035 and ENG 100/101

  • Dawn Danahy - A&P daytime sections

  • Minh Tran - A&P evening & Saturday sections; TEAS prep

  • Tami VanSteenburg - MTH 025, MTH 050, MTH 101

  • Norman Tucker - Backup for Tami, email and phone help

16

Professional Expectations

  • ALWAYS check students in using Student Checkin --even if they are just picking up extra credit sheets.

  • Keep your phone on vibrate and take/make personal calls outside the HUB.

  • Be aware of where you are at all times, and be alert to movement of any sort. Do not wear headphones if students are in the HUB or if you cannot see who is coming in.

  • Be positive in your interactions. Avoid saying, "I don't know," or "I don't do that." Instead say, "Let's find out," or "Let's see who can help."

17

Professional Expectations II

  • Always have at least 15 handouts printed and ready to go at any given time. Don't wait until we run out completely to make more copies. Do bulk printing on the hall printer, not HUB printer.

  • Proofread emails before sending them to students, faculty, or staff. Have Kris check them ahead of time if you are in doubt of phrasing.

  • Be respectful of faculty. We are here to support them and the students, not the other way around.

18

Preofessional Expectations III

  • Do not discuss students with other tutors in front of students. Also do not share with students personal communications from faculty about them or anyone else.

  • If you are concerned about your safety, IM Jonathan Montalvo or call 677-1911.

  • Kris is not a tutor. She is happy to help when she can, but tutors need to help students as much as they can.

  • Until the college says otherwise, always wear a mask around students.

Open Ended

We are currently printing A&P extra credit handouts relate only to material that is covered in class that week. The full extra credit module in still in Blackboard, and Minh is offering weekly review sessions. What is a positive way to communicate this to students?
