Love in Dante's Inferno

  • ''THROUGH ME THE WAY INTO THE SUFFERING CITY,

    THROUGH ME THE WAY TO THE ETERNAL PAIN,

    THROUGH ME THE WAY THAT RUNS AMONG THE LOST.

    JUSTICE URGED ON MY HIGH ARTIFICER;

    MY MAKER WAS DIVINE AUTHORITY,

    THE HIGHEST WISDOM, AND THE PRIMAL LOVE.

    BEFORE ME NOTHING BUT ETERNAL THINGS

    ABANDON EVERY HOPE, WHO ENTER HERE.''

  • Love, which stems from God, is the source of Hell

19

Love in Dante's Inferno

  • God created hell out of love to teach sinners what happens to them when they lose sight of being good

  • Through their punishments, they can see the importance of love and feel what it is like to be without love.

20

Truth and Error in Dante's Inferno

  • Canto I describes how Dante is lost in "The Dark Wood of Error"

  • He cannot determine if all he is seeing is true or just imaginary

  • Dante tries to find his way out, but his path is blocked by three beasts, which represent sin

  • Dante and Virgil then begin the journey through Hell, during which the truth of God's righteousness and judgement is revealed
