Week 25 Quotations Warm Up
2
Quotation Marks & When To Use Them
Goal: By the end of this warm up, I will know how to correctly use a quotation mark in two ways.
3
Overview
1. Watch a Quotation Marks video
2. Quotation Marks in Direct Quotes
3. Quotation Marks for Titles
4
1. Watch this Quotation Marks video.
Note: If it doesn't work, that's okay! We can watch it in class.
5
2. Direct Quotes
Direct Quotation: Quoting EXACTLY what someone else says.
Where do I put the quotation marks? ALWAYS put the quotation marks around the beginning AND end of the quote. Otherwise the reader will not know when the quote starts and stops.
"Get the milk," she said.
Incorrect: "Get the milk, she said. <- This just has one at the beginning.
Incorrect: "Get the milk, she said." <- This is confusing, the "she said" part does not need to be in quotations.
6
When do I not need to put quotation marks?
When you are talking about what someone said, but you don't directly quote them.
Ex: Emett said he needed to go home and rest.
Ex: I was being loud so the librarian told me to be quiet.
Ex: Hannah said she was going to meet up with us later.
<--All of these examples talk about what someone said without quoting exactly what was said.

Direct Quotes: What about commas and periods?
Commas and periods go inside the quotation marks.
Example: Mark said "I hate oranges," the other day.
Example: Jade said, “I love when it’s hot outside.”

Direct Quotes: When do I capitalize?
When quoting the entire direct quote, capitalize the first letter in the quote.
Ex: The exact phrase she used was “There is no way we will get there in time.” <--See how T in There is capitalized?
When using just a piece of the quote and not the whole thing, don't capitalize.
Ex: He called them “loud, energetic and positive” and he gave them a good grade. <--See how the l in loud isn't capitalized?
13

Direct Quotations: What if I want to break a quote up?
Sometimes in one sentence, we put a direct quote, add some non quoted words, and then have a direct quote at the end.
Example: “The problem with opinions,” Paula explained, “is that everyone has one."
Or, we put a direct quote in the middle of our sentence.
Example: He called them “loud, smelly, and utterly annoying,” and he slammed the door.
Both of these are great, but that's why we need quotation marks so the reader knows which part of the sentence is the direct quote!

3. Titles
We use quotation marks for shorter works. If it's short, it goes in quotations.
Example: T.V. episodes, book chapters, songs, short stories, articles, poems.
What did you think of the Buffy the Vampire episode “Once More, With Feeling”? <--The episode is short, just one of many in the T.V. show, so its in quotations.
Example: My favorite song right now is “Good Days" by SZA. <---A song is short, so it's in quotations.
Example: I love the poem "Where the Sidewalk Ends." <--This is title of a poem, so its in quotations.
Things NOT in quotation marks: Movies, books, newspapers, plays <-- All of these things are much longer.
