Key words

  • Clause - A group of words containing both a subject and a verb. For example- She ran away.

  • Independent \main clause - This can stand alone as a complete sentence with the appropriate punctuation.

  • Dependent/subordinate clauses can't stand alone. They need independent clauses to make them complete. They are joined to independent clauses by subordinate conjunctions such as although, because, since, if, when. Example; because she was afraid.

Simple sentences

Has a subject and only one verb.

Compound sentences

A compound sentence is formed when you join two main clauses with a co-coordinating connective.(for,and,nor,but,or,yet and so)

For example;

She paints well but she does not love art.

Complex sentences

It is made up of a dependent(main clause) and independent clause(subordinating clause), that are joined together by a subordinating conjunction.( If, since, as, when,although,while,after,before,until,because)

For example, When they heard the bell, the students ran to class.
