Although soccer is a well-known sport, we still need to talk about the skills of the game.

Dribbling

When dribbling, the insides, outsides, insteps, and soles of feet can be used to control the ball and navigate past other players.


Dribbling in soccer is similar to dribbling in basketball- the purpose is to move the ball.

Trapping & Heading the Ball

Two of the most common ways to receive a soccer ball is to trap the ball with your feet, or to head the ball (hitting it with your head).

Tackles

There are three main tackles in soccer:

1. Poke tackles

2. Block tackles

3. Sliding tackles

Poke Tackle

A defender waits for a chance to quickly poke the ball away from the opponent using their foot.

Block Tackle

The defender hooks their foot around the ball, either from the front or the side, after which the tackler wins the ball, or the ball slides away from both players.

Sliding Tackle

The defender slides towards the ball and stops both it and the attacker's momentum with the feet or another part of the body.

Throw-ins

Throw-ins are used to restart a woccer game after the ball has crossed the touchline.

The thrower stands behind the touchline and faces the field of play- both feet must be partially on the ground before and after the throw.
