Asexual Reproduction

  • A means "without" or "not"

Occurs when organisms make more of itself (identical)

  • Practiced by most single-celled organisms including bacteria, archaebacteria, and protists. Some plants, animals, and fungi can reproduce asexually.

11

Types of Asexual Reproduction

  • Binary Fission

  • Budding

  • Spores

  • Fragmentation

  • Vegetative reproduction

12

Advantages of Asexual Reproduction

  • Rapid population growth

  • No mate needed

  • Fewer resources needed

13

Disadvantage of Asexual Reproduction

  • Lack of diversity

14

Multiple Choice

How does the DNA of the offspring formed from asexual reproduction compare to the parent?

1

none of the DNA is transferred to the offspring

2

half of the DNA is transferred to the offspring

3

the DNA of the offspring is identical to the DNA of the parent

4

none of these are correct

15

Multiple Choice

Which of these is NOT an advantage of asexual reproduction.

1

Enables organisms to reproduce without a mate

2

Requires less time and energy

3

Results in little genetic variation

4

Enables organisms to produce large amounts of offspring

5

Enables plants to spread and colonize an area in a short period of time

16

Multiple Choice

All of the offspring of an organism have the same genetic material, which is identical to the parent organism?
1
makes its own food
2
goes away
3
live in a marine habitat
4
reproduces asexually

17

Multiple Choice

If the environment changes for an Asexual offspring it will?
1
Explode
2
Create another offspring
3
Fall in love
4
Die

18

Did you know???

Some species of plants, animals, and fungi are capable of both depending on the environment!

19

Sexual Reproduction

  • Occurs in some fungi, some protists, and many plants and animals.

  • Uniting of different gametes, which are reproductive cells

  • Genetic information from both parents

  • Offspring gets 23 chromosomes from each parent

20

Advantages of Sexual Reproduction

  • Increased diversity

  • Genetic variation

  • Survival advantage

21

Disadvantage of Sexual Reproduction

  • Time is needed to find a mate

  • Isolation cannot happen in order to mate

22

Multiple Choice

Why does sexual reproduction result in more genetic diversity than asexual reproduction?
1
Traits from two parents are combined.
2
More organisms reproduce this way.
3
Offspring grow in different environments.
4
Offspring come from identical parents.

23

Multiple Choice

What are some of the facts about sexual reproduction?

1

Takes two mates to reproduce and takes a longer time to reproduce

2

Takes one mate to reproduce and takes a shorter amount of time to reproduce

3

Takes two mates to reproduce and takes a shorter amount of time to reproduce

24

Multiple Choice

Male and female reproductive cells are collectively known as:

1

spores

2

pollen

3

gametes

4

offspring

25

Multiple Select

What are some disadvantages to sexual reproduction? (select all that apply)

1

it takes a lot of energy to find a mate

2

you don't need another mate

3

it requires a male and a female

4

more genetic errors can occur
