Place Value with decimals

The chart would be a good item to add to your card.

Place value helps when:

1. Determining how to name decimal values.

2. Round decimal values

3. Write in expanded form

Three forms of expressing decimal values:

  • Standard form: 46.879 (good for notes)

  • Written form: forty-six AND eight hundred seventy-nine thousandths (remember the last digit is the place named in the decimal value)

  • Expanded form: 40 + 6 +

810  + 7100+ 91000\frac{8}{10\ }\ +\ \frac{7}{100}+\ \frac{9}{1000}  (expanded behind the decimal is in fraction form according to the place value)

  • Good for note card!!!!!

Operations involving decimals

  • Adding and subtracting decimal values make sure to line up the decimals point.

  • Multiplication involves moving the decimal point in the answer the amount of decimal places totaled in the problem.

  • Division the rule to remember: always divide by a whole number. If you need to move the decimal in the divisor then that is the same amount of spaces moved in the dividend.

Multiplying and dividing decimals by 10's

  • When you multiply a decimal value by 10, you move the decimal point one place to the right for every zero being multiplied.

  • Ex: 356.87 x 10 = 3568.7

  • Dividing a decimal value by 10, you move the decimal point one place to the left for every zero being divided.

  • Ex: 987.653

     ÷\div  100 = 9.87653

  • Good note card material!!!!!

  • The same rule applies for decimals like whole number values: 5 or more raise the score by 1, 4 or less stay.

  • The difference between rounding a whole number and a decimal is when the decimal is rounded the place ask is where it changes and no zeros are added. (Good card info)

  • Ex: 98.907 round to hundredth

  • 98.91 look at the 0 there is a 7 behind it; raise the zero by 1 NO ZEROS ADDED.
