There are 40 apples in the basket.

Peter takes one fifth of the apples.

Mary takes one eighth of the apples.

How many are left?

  • Peter takes 1/5 or 40 ÷ 5 = 8

  • Mary takes 1/8 or 40 ÷ 8 = 5

  • This means that 13 have been taken

  • To work out what is left we subtract 13 from 40 (40 - 13)

  • 40 - 13 = 27 apples

Mia thinks that

25 x 3 = 75

25 x 30 = 750

25 x 300 = 7500

Is she correct? Please explain why or why not.

  • Yes, she is. Alison is multiplying by 3, then 30, then 300.

  • The amount of zeros match the place value of the numbers that she is multiplying by.

10

Cooper thinks that

25 x 35 =

25 x 5 + 25 x 30

He thinks that 25 x 5 = 125 and 25 x 30 = 750

Therefore, 25 x 35 = 875

Is he correct? Explain why or why not

  • 35 is the same as 30 +5.

  • Therefore, the two numbers:125 (25 x 5) 750 (25 x 30) can be added together to make 25 x 35.
