• Peter takes 1/5 or 40 ÷ 5 = 8

• Mary takes 1/8 or 40 ÷ 8 = 5

• This means that 13 have been taken

• To work out what is left we subtract 13 from 40 (40 - 13)

• 40 - 13 = 27 apples

Mia thinks that

• Yes, she is. Alison is multiplying by 3, then 30, then 300.
