Quadrilaterals are also known as quadrangles

Quad is the Latin root meaning 4. Another word that begins with 'quad' is quadruplet. Quadruplets are four children that are born from the same mother at the same time.

We are going to learn about 4 different quadrangles.

5

Trapezoid

Did you know all of these shapes are trapezoids? A trapezoid is any 4 sided shape with at least 1 pair of parallel lines.

Slide image

6

Common Trapezoids

  • These are the polygons that we usually call trapezoids.

  • You can see that each of them has one set of parallel lines .

  • One has a right angle.

Slide image

7

Rectangle

  • 2 pairs of parallel sides

  • 2 pairs of equal length sides

  • 4 right angles

  • Yes, a square is a rectangle!

Trapezoid

2

Rectangle

3

Square

9

Square

  • 4 equal length sides

  • 4 right angles

  • 2 pairs of parallel sides

  • A square is always a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't always a square.

10

Watch out for rotations!

This is still a square - it is just rotated a bit. Remember, we use characteristics of shapes!

This is not a diamond.

Slide image

11

Rhombus

  • 2 pairs of parallel sides

  • 4 sides that are equal length

  • Yes, a square is also a rhombus!

  • The plural of rhombus is rhombus or rhombi (ROM - buy)

Square

13

It's just a trapezoid!

  • It's not a square or rectangle because it doesn't have 4 right angles.

  • It's not a rhombus because it has different side lengths.

Choose the word that describes this shape.

1

Rhombus

2

Square

3

Rectangle

15

It's a rhombus

  • It has four sides of the same length.

  • But...it does not have any right angles. Square and rectangles always have right angles.

  • It is also technically a trapezoid.

Rectangle & Trapezoid

  • It's a rectangle because it has four right angles and opposite parallel sides.

  • It's a trapezoid because it has at least 1 pair of parallel sides

  • It is neither a square nor a rhombus because all four sides aren't the same length.
