Carter V. Good has said in Dictionary of Education (1959), “Guidance is a process of dynamic interpersonal relationships designed to influence the attitudes and subsequent behaviour of person.”

A.J. Jones. “Guidance involves personal help given by a competent person" ; it is designed to assist a person in deciding where he wants to go, what he wants to do, or how he can best accomplish his purposes; it assists him in solving problems that arise in his life. It helps the individual make intelligent choices and adjustments.

Father of Guidance, Frank Parsons

1. Clear understanding of self and one's aptitudes, interests, ambitions, resources, and limitations and their causes.

2. Adequate knowledge of the requirements and conditions of success, advantages and disadvantages, compensation, opportunities, and prospects of different lines of work.

Meaning of Guidance

Characteristics of Guidance

• It is a help given by one person to another in solving problem.

• It is not giving directions and imposition of one person’s point of view upon another person.

• It is formal as well as informal process of guidance.

• It is a continuous and life long process for all sphere or walk of life.

• It enables the individual to take decision to grow independently and he is responsible for himself.

Characteristics of Guidance

• It is a process of development.

• It provides richer experiences for making his-own contribution to our democratic society

• It is the mental effort to conserve the priceless native capacities of youth and costly training provided for youth in school.

• It is related to the life goals and makes desirable member of the social order

• it is a means to guide not the problem solving method.
