Understanding Percentage

Percent

Tom has 100 apples. He puts 10 apples in each bowl.

Since 20 out of apples are red, we can say that 20% of the apples are red.

Percent (%)

% stands for percent and it means 'out of 100'.

So, 20% means 20 out of 100.

Part of a whole

Look at the square. It is divided into 100 equal parts.

13 out of 100 parts of the square are shaded. So, 13/100 of the square is shaded.

We can also say that 13% of the square/whole is shaded.
