Outcomes and Events

Objective: You will be able to identify and count the outcomes of experiments

3

An experiment?

An experiment is the process of investigating something where we may test or look for something, make observations, and collect data....

4

... but this isn't Science! ??

Whether we are doing scientific experiments or investigating the possibilities of something happening, these processes are still experiments.

5

Experiment

'an investigation or procedure that has varying results'

6

Mathematical Experiments

we want to find the possibility that a particular event will occur

7

Let's say we want to choose a marble from this group...

8

More specifically, let's say we want to choose a yellow marble...

the act of choosing a yellow marble is an event

Slide image

9

Outcomes:

  • Favorable Outcomes - these are the number of times a specific event will occur

  • Possible Outcomes - these are the total number of outcomes, including favorable and unfavorable outcomes

  • the collection of one or more outcomes is an event

10

Let's say again that we want to choose a yellow marble...

  • what is the favorable outcome?

  • what is the number of possible outcomes?

Multiple Choice

What is an experiment?

1

testing things during Science class only

2

any investigation or procedure that has varying results

3

only when we are choosing marbles

4

any exercise that involves vigorous activity and raising the heart rate

14

Multiple Choice

What is a event?

1

a collection of one or more outcomes

2

a collection of marbles

3

a collection of favorable outcomes

4

a collection of unfavorable outcomes

15

Multiple Choice

Question image

Randy closes his eyes and chooses a marble from the bowl. He wants to choose a red marble. Him choosing a red marble is an example of:

1

a trick

2

an unfavorable event

3

a favorable event

4

all possible events

16

Let's say you want to choose a black pair of jeans...

What is the number of favorable outcomes?

What is the number of possible outcomes?

18

Let's say you want to roll an even number...

What is the event?

What would be a favorable outcome?

19

Let's say you want to roll an even number...

Rolling the die each time would be an event.

A favorable outcome would be rolling an even number.
