Y et En

Y and En are considered "adverbial pronouns". We can think of them as Indirect Object Pronouns (IOP), and they can be used with both DOPs and IOPs. They each replace a specific part of a sentence.

Y

• Means 'there' or 'it' in English

• replaces a place preposition (à, en, dans, sur, chez, derrière, devant) and the place

• replaces à + thing

• Thierry était en Espagne.

• Thierry y était.

• Cette actrice habite dans le Connecticut.

• Cette actrice y habite.

• Je suis allée à la Suisse.

• J'y suis allée.

Y - with à expressions

• Je pense à la France.
