Quizizz Lesson: Unit 5 Part 1
Basics of Bonding
Beginning Ionic Bonding: Formulas and Naming
2
In the universe around us we seldomly find elements in pure form. Elements are found bound to other elements in compounds. This is because elements are naturally unstable and reactive. This "reactivity" becomes stabilized in compounds as both elements electron orbitals become full or stable.
Bonding Basics
3
All elements are seeking a full valence shell of electrons.
As they do this they can commonly gain or lose electrons.
Sometimes they can "share" electrons as well in order to fulfill the valence shell of both atoms.
This is where predicted ionic charges come from.

Ionic Bond - an ionic bond exists when a metal loses electrons to a nonmetal.
This causes the metal to become charged positively while the nonmetal to have a negative charge. These opposite charges are not attracted to each other like magnets.
Bonding Basics
6
Covalent Bond - an covalent bond exists when a two nonmetals (both seeking more electrons) share some of their valence electrons to make both elements happy.
Bonding Basics
7
Covalent Bond -
These shared electrons orbit the nucleus of both elements holding them together like a belt.
