What are the 3 types of sub-atomic particles found in an atom?
10
Atoms have 3 types of sub-atomic particles
Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
11
How do we find the number of sub-atomic particles for an element in the periodic table?
First: We have to identify the atomic number and atomic mass of the element.
12
13
Finding the number of protons
The number of protons is equal to the Atomic number of the element.
Example: the number of protons for oxygen is 8 which is the same as the atomic number.
14
Finding the number of electrons
The number of electrons is equal to the number of protons of the element.
Example: the number of electrons for oxygen is 8 which is the same as number of protons.
15
Finding the number of neutrons
The number of neutrons are found by subtracting the atomic number from the atomic mass (rounded off).
16
Finding the number of neutorns
The number of neutrons are found by subtracting the atomic number from the atomic mass (rounded off).
Example: The number of neutrons for oxygen is
N = m - n
N = 16 - 8
N= 8 neutrons
17
Can you find the number of protons, neutrons and electron for this element?
18
Step: 1
Find the atomic number.
The atomic number = the number of protons
Number of protons = 6
19
Step: 2
The protons (same as atomic number) = the number of electrons
Number of electrons = 6
20
Step: 2
Find the atomic mass. This is the number below the symbol.
Round it off to a whole number.
12.011 = 12
atomic mass = 12
21
Step: 3
Find the number of neutrons.
Subtract the atomic number (same as protons) from the atomic mass.
N = m - n
N = 12 - 6
N = 6 neutrons

TASK
Create a table with the names and symbols of the first 20 elements of the periodic table.
In your table include the number of protons, electrons and neutron of each element.
Upload a copy or picture of your table to google classrooms.
