Gerundios (Gerunds) en español

-iendo and -ando

11

Gerundios - Present Progressive

  • Examples of ENGLISH gerunds: Swimming, doing, singing, sleeping, eating .... NOTICE HOW all these end in -ING

  • IN SPANISH you turn a verb into a GERUNDIO (gerund) using -ANDO and -IENDO

12

Creating the gerundio (gerund)

1) AR verbs use -ANDO

2) ER and IR verbs use -IENDO

Drop the suffix and add the appropriate suffix:

Bailar --> Bailando (dancing)

Cantar --> Cantando (singing)

Vivir --> Viviendo (living)

El verbo estar + gerundio

  • You must first conjugate "estar" (to be) before you turn the infinitive into a gerundio

  • Why? Because remember that Estar means to be (i am, you are, etc) and our acronym PLACE the A stands for ongoing actions

  • Ejemplo: Estoy jugando (I am playing)

  • Tú estás comprando (you are buying)

  • Nosotros estamos enviando correo (You are sending mail)

14

¿Cuál es la diferencia? What's the difference?

  • Nosotros estamos jugando ajedrez (We are playing chess)

  • Nosotros jugamos ajedres (We play chess)

  • First sentence ---> it is a continuous, ongoing and developing action in the present

  • 2nd sentence --> This is a habit or a routine action in the present
