One Step Equations

  • Step 1: Determine your inverse operation.

  • Step 2: Complete your one step to balance both sides.

  • Step 3: Check your work by plugging your answer for the variable.

3

Multiple Choice

What is the purpose of doing the inverse operation?

1

make things difficult

2

isolate the variable

3

move numbers around

4

set it equal to zero

4

Multiple Choice

What is the inverse operation used in x - 4 = 10 ?

1

add 10

2

subtract 10

3

Review: Distributive property

  • "Distribute" means to give out.

  • You "give out" the number outside of the parentheses to the numbers inside of the parentheses by multiplying.

  • Ex. 2 ( 5 + 6) = 2 (5) + 2 (6) = 10 + 12 = 22

  • Notice each number inside parentheses received a 2.

12

Review: Like Terms

  • Have the same variable, or letter, and the same base, or exponent

  • Can be added or subtracted together

  • Ex. 1 + 2 + 3 - 4 + n = 15

  • 1, 2, 3, and 4 are all constants and like terms

  • So it simplifies to 2 + n = 15

13

Multiple Choice

What is the FIRST step in this problem?

4 (2 - 1) + n = 8

1

subtract n

2

divide by 8

3

add 1 to balance

4

distribute the 4

14

Multiple Choice

4 (2-1) + n = 8

4 (2) - 4 (1) + n = 8

8 - 4 + n = 8

Now solve for n.

4 + n = 8

Multiple Choice

What is the first step in this problem?

5 + 6 - 3 + b = 20

1

multiply by 20

2

subtract b from both sides

3

combine like terms

4

add three to both sides

16

Multiple Choice

5 + 6 - 3 + b = 20

11 - 3 + b = 20

Solve for b.

8 + b = 20
