What is future tense?

  • It is a verb tense used for a future activity

SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE

The simple future tense is used for an action that will happen in the future.


I (subject) shall go (verb in infinitive or basic form).

We will celebrate your birthday by going on a trip to the beach.

Shall/Will we travel during Easter this year?

Used for

  • Predictions: Usually used with perhaps or before the verbs believe, think, hope, expect, sure, etc.

  • I'm sure she will pass the exam.

  • Promises

  • I'll never do that again.

  • Offers and requests

  • I will drive you to the station.

  • Will you wash the dishes, please?

  • Threats and warnings

  • Don't say that again or I will ground you.

  • On-the-spot decisions

  • I won't buy that dress. It's too expensive.

FUTURE PERFECT TENSE

The future perfect tense is used to describe an action that will have been completed at some point in the future.

I will have eaten my lunch by then.

By the time you arrive, I will have finished my homework.

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

The future perfect continuous, also sometimes called the future perfect progressive, is a verb tense that describes actions that will continue up until a point in the future.


In November, I will have been learning English for three months.

At five o'clock, I will have been waiting for thirty minutes.

FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE

The future continuous tense is used for an ongoing action that will occur in the future.


John will be baking a cake.

They will be painting the fence.


We won't be looking deeper at this as it is meant for a higher grade.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

We use the Present Continuous to talk about action happening now and action in the future.


She is living with her sister until she finds an apartment.

She is learning to play the piano.

PRESENT SIMPLE

We use the Present Simple to describe customs and habits, general facts and unchanging situations.


I have English lessons every Saturday.

She won't eat raw broccoli, but she likes cooked broccoli.
