Cylinders

The formula for finding the volume of a cylinder is  V=πr2×hV=\pi r^2\times h  .

In other words....
area of the base (circle) x height

Slide image

7

Example:

  • First find the area of the base...  π62=36π\pi6^2=36\pi  (diameter is 12 so radius is 6)

  • Then multiply the base by the height...  36π×11=396π36\pi\times11=396\pi

  • Either leave your answer in terms of pi or round to the nearest tenth in the calculator...  396π=396×π=1,244.1396\pi=396\times\pi=1,244.1

Cones

A cone holds a third less of the volume of a cylinder. So the volume of a cone is...

  V=13πr2×hV=\frac{1}{3}\pi r^2\times h

Slide image

12

Example:

  • Find the area of the base...  π82=64π\pi8^2=64\pi

  • Multiply the base by the height...  64π×16=1024π64\pi\times16=1024\pi

  • Divide that by 3...  1024π3\frac{1024\pi}{3}  (This fraction doesn't simplify)

  • Round if asked.... 1024π3=3216.993=1072.33\frac{1024\pi}{3}=\frac{3216.99}{3}=1072.33

Spheres

The volume of a sphere is based of the radius, just like area and circumference...
 V=43πr3V=\frac{4}{3}\pi r^3

Slide image

17

Example:

  • Find the radius of the sphere... r=10 because diameter=20

  • Plug it into the formula...  43π103=431000π\frac{4}{3}\pi10^3=\frac{4}{3}1000\pi

  • Simplify...  431000π=4000π3\frac{4}{3}1000\pi=\frac{4000\pi}{3}

  • Round if asked....  4000π3=12,566.373=4,188.8\frac{4000\pi}{3}=\frac{12,566.37}{3}=4,188.8
