How can you find the area of a polygon with more than 4 sides?

How can you find the area of a polygon by adding parts?

Step 1: Divide the polygon into parts.

We divided this polygon into 3 rectangles.

Step Two: Find the area of each part.

Part 1:

Base = 3 ft

Height = 5 ft because the opposite was 5 ft.

So, 3 x 5 = 15 ft²

Step Two: Find the area of each part.

Part 2:

Base = 26 ft

Height = 10 ft because the entire side is 15 ft, so 15 ft - 5 ft from shape 1 = 10 ft.

So, 26 x 10 = 260 ft²

Step Two: Find the area of each part.

Part 3:

Base = 4 ft

Height = 5 ft

So, 4 x 5 = 20 ft²

Step Three: Add the areas.

Shape 1: 15 ft²

Shape 2: 260 ft²

Shape 3: 20 ft²

15 + 260 + 20 = 295 ft²
