Shadows (Part 2)
In this part, you will learn:
1. Observe that the lengths and positions of shadows change throughout the day.
2. Investigate how the position of an object affect the size of its shadow.
2
When we observe the picture above, we can see that LIGHT TRAVELS IN STRAIGHT LINES.

5
In this picture, light from the light source travels in straight line by the opaque paper beaver.
The light DOES NOT bend around the paper beaver to reach the screen (Wall) behind it.
6
SOLAR ECLIPSE the saga.
In the past people thought that solar eclipse happens because the Gods were angry.
7
Even in our country, they believe that a gigantic creature called BUTO IJO was responsible causing solar eclipse.
8
Ancient astronomers made many observations, measurements and predictions of eclipses.
Scientist, including astronomer, built on the work of the earlier scientist.
9
They collected evidence and carried out experiments to test their ideas.
If they found evidence that the ideas were not true, they rejected those ideas and tested other ideas.
Sometimes, they improved on the old ideas.
10
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth.
When the three are in the straight line, the Moon blocks the sunlight and forms a shadow on the Earth.
For people on Earth who are in the Moon's shadow, the Sun seems to disappear before re-appearing when the Moon moves on.
11
How do shadows change?
As the position of the flashlight changes, what do you notice about the LENGTH and POSITION of the shadow formed?
12
We can observe this when we look at our own shadows under the Sun at different times of the day.
13
The shadows are different in LENGTH and POSITION because the position of the LIGHT SOURCE changes.
14
Shadow changes in SIZES
The POSITION OF AN OBJECT affects the size of its shadow.
1. When the object is nearer to the light source its shadow is bigger.
2. When it is further from the light source its shadow is smaller.
