Combining Like Terms REVIEW Video
You should have watched the YOUTUBE VIDEO under today's assignment in Google Classroom. You will be lost if you have not watched this video for the next few questions!
3
Multiple Select
Choose the terms that are on the SAME TEAM! (must have watched the video to know what I'm referring to!!)
2ab
3a
4ab
5b

4
Multiple Choice
Combine Like Terms: 3x−4y+2−x
0xy
4x−2y
2x−4y+2
−4y
5
Combining Like Terms
3x−4y+2−x
First, see who is on the SAME TEAM!
3x and -x are on the same team. Remember: you HAVE to pay attention to the SIGN in front of the term. This becomes 3x minus 1x, making your result 2x.
-4y and +2 have no other team members. They stay the same.
The result of combining like terms is: 2x−4y+2
6
Multiple Choice
Let's try another one!
Combine Like Terms: 5h+10g−4+7g−3h
19gh−4
2h+17g−4
15g−4+4h
7
Combining Like Terms
5h+10g−4+7g−3h
First, see who is on the SAME TEAM!
5h and -3h are on the same team. Remember: you HAVE to pay attention to the SIGN in front of the term. This becomes 5h minus 3h, making your result 2h.
10g and 7g are on the same team. Remember: you HAVE to pay attention to the SIGN in front of the term. This becomes 10g plus 7g, making your result 17g.
The -4 does not have any team mates and stays the same.
The result of combining like terms is: 2h+17g−4
8
Addition & Subtraction Equations
Let's review solving addition & subtraction equations for your quiz tomorrow! Yes, there are some word problems too (that you have seen before!!)
9
Solving Addition & Subtraction Equations
First, determine the operation (addition or subtraction)
Then, determine the INVERSE operation needed to solve (inverse = opposite!!) For addition, the inverse is subtraction. For subtraction, the inverse is addition.
Make sure you SHOW ALL STEPS OF YOUR WORK! You WILL have to upload images of your work on the quiz. This can help you earn points if you make a calculation mistake.
Let's try a few.
10
Multiple Select
In the equation m+4.5=9 , what is the INVERSE operation to solve?
addition
subtraction
multiplication
division
11
Multiple Select
In the equation m+4.5=9 , what is the first step to solving this equation?
add 4.5
add 4.5 to both sides
subtract 4.5
subtract 4.5 from both sides
12
Fill in the Blanks
Solve the equation: m+4.5=9
Type answer...
13
When solving m+4.5=9 :
You must first subtract 4.5 from BOTH SIDES.
Then, your result is m = 4.5.
14
Let's try some on your own.

Fill in the Blanks
Solve the equation: n+9=17
Type answer...
16
Multiple Select
Which of the following are solutions to the equation: p+13=27
p=12
p=10
p=4
p=14
17
Multiple Choice
Solve the equation: 6=n−4
n = -2
n = 10
n = 8
n = -3
18
Let's try some word problems.
19
Multiple Choice
Natalie visits a grocery store to buy tomatoes. The cost of the tomatoes is $26. She paid the bill and received $4 in change from the cashier. Write and solve an equation to find out how much she paid the cashier. Let m = amount she paid.
m−26=4
m+26=4
20
What you should have gotten.....
When Natalie pays the cashier, she pays MORE than the amount of her groceries, which is why she had change given back.
In order to find out how much she paid the cashier, we must use a subtraction equation.
The TOTAL AMOUNT SHE PAID minus THE COST OF THE GROCERIES equals $4 in change.
The equation for this problem is: m−26=4
21
Multiple Choice
Lara and Mae participated in a quiz contest. They scored 23 points in all. If Lara scored 9 points, write and solve an equation to determine how many points Mae scored. Let p = how many points Mae scored.
p+9=23
p−9=23
22
What you should have gotten.....
They scored a TOTAL of 23 points, meaning you should have =23 in your equation.
To get the TOTAL of 23 points, you must ADD Lara and Mae together.
Since we do not know the amount Mae scored, we must use a variable in that place. p (Mae's points) plus 9 will give you 23 total points scored.
The equation for this problem is: p+9=23
23
Let's try some on your own.

Multiple Choice
John was gifted with a pack of crayons. Rhea borrowed 13 crayons and John was left with 12 crayons. Write and solve an equation to find how many crayons the pack contained originally. Let c = number of crayons.
c−13=12, c=1
c+13=12, c=1
c−13=12, c=25
c+13=12, c=25

Multiple Choice
Trevor took a test and had one hour to complete the test. There were two sections to be answered. If he finished the first section in 35 minutes, write and solve an equation to determine how much time he had left to complete the second section. Let t = time.
35+t=60, t=85
35+t=60, t=25
35−t=60, t=25
35−t=60, t=85
26
Multiple Choice
Rose has two baskets; one contains apples and one contains bananas. Together, the baskets weigh 5.55 pounds. Write and solve an equation to find how much the basket of bananas weighs if the basket of apples weighs 2.34 pounds. Let w = weight of bananas.
2.34+w=5.55, w=3.21
2.34−w=5.55, w=7.89
2.34−w=5.55, w=3.21
2.34+w=5.55, w=7.89
