Complex Sentences

  • Consists of at least one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

  • Joined by subordinating conjunctions.

  • As, Although, After, While, When, Unless, Because, Before, If, Since.

Clauses

  • Independent clause - Has as subject and a verb and can stand alone as a sentence.

  • Dependent clause - Starts with a subordinating conjunction. (AAAWUUBBIS) It cannot stand alone as a sentence.

Where does the comma go?

  • Because you were daydreaming in class, you missed the lesson.

  • You missed the lesson because you were daydreaming in class.

  • The comma goes in the middle of the sentences when it is started with a dependent clause.
