Armadillo Girdled Lizard (South Africa)Endemic to the Northern and Western Cape provinces of South Africa, this lizard reminds us of nothing more than a tiny dragon. This resemblance is especially pronounced when they roll themselves up to protect themselves from danger—the behaviour that earned them their name.

Another interesting fact about Armadillo Girdled Lizards is that they are one of the few lizard species who give birth to live young, and there is some evidence that the females may actually feed her young, which is even more uncommon.

Magnificent frigatebird (Galapagos Islands)These incredible birds, endemic to the Galapagos Islands, boast wingspans of nearly two and a half metres and have been spotted flying as high as 2,500 metres above sea level.

They are sometimes called ‘man-o’-war’ birds, because they like to attack other birds while they’re flying and even try to steal their food on occasion.

What makes these birds truly strange, though, is the big red sac the males have on their chests, which they balloon up to try to attract a mate.

Pink Fairy Armadillo (Argentina)These beautifully bizarre creatures might just be our favorites on this list!

The pink fairy armadillo is a tiny creature found only in central Argentina, and they are so rare that scientists have not even been able to classify their conservation status. Small enough to fit in a human hand, these tiny armadillos are nocturnal and burrow in the ground.

These are generally difficult to spot due to their shyness, but if you want to try, central Argentina is the place to go.

SparklemuffinThis Australian peacock spider was discovered inside the woodland forests of Wondul National Park, near Brisbane, in 2015. Scientifically named maratus jactatus, sparklemuffin earned its colloquial name from University of California researcher Madeline Girard, who discovered the species. These colorful spiders measure just five millimeters in length and display a signature mating dance, where male spiders raise a leg to signal females.

Axolotl This remarkable amphibian is native to a small series of lakes and canals near Mexico City. Once numbering in the thousands and providing an important food source for the Aztec, the wild population of axolotl is thought to have dwindled to just a few individuals due to habitat loss. Axolotl can grow to lengths of 18 inches, and they are characterized by a unique set of external gills along with the ability to completely regrow lost limbs.

Bilby Twenty million years ago, the bilby branched off from the bandicoot family, creating a marsupial that looks like a combination of a piglet, a rabbit and a bandicoot. Today, the bilby enjoys iconic status as Australia's version of the Easter Bunny. Each April, chocolate bilbies populate store shelves Down Under in an effort to raise awareness for the native animal that has lost some 80 percent of its population in the past 200 years.
