What is force and motion?

Anytime there is a change in motion, force is the responsible party. It has to overcome inertia to act on an object. Inertia keeps an object either sitting still or moving at a constant speed.

Vocabulary

• Force: any action that changes the shape or movement of an object

• Inertia: an object's resistance to any change in motion

• Friction: the force that slows down objects when they rub up against each other.

• an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by another force

• the more friction there is, the more force you need to apply

• greater force = greater change in movement

• a force is a push or pull that acts on an object

• we need forces to set objects in motion
