Making Inferences

2

I CAN explain and identify the differences between inferences and predictions.

  • Prediction - an assumption about the future based on what is happening in the text

  • Inference - an assumption about a character's personality, setting, and/or conflicts based on what the text states

  • Difference - Predictions focus on the future and are guess what actions and events that WILL happen. Inferences give a deeper picture to what is happening in the text by guessing what is true based on the information the author gives in the story.

3

I CAN make predictions based on foreshadowing.

I CAN support predictions using textual evidence.

  • Predictions ARE educated guesses. Always use the text to guide your thinking. Why can you assume that something will or will not happen?

4

I CAN make inferences about the characters’ personalities, the setting, the conflict, etc.

  • Think about their actions and dialogue. What do they do and say that makes you see who they are?

  • What parts of the personality are already shown in the text? Why would the author include these traits to further show personality?

  • How does their background affect their personality? What behaviors might be shown because of their experiences?

5

I CAN make inferences about the characters’ personalities, the setting, the conflict, etc.

  • Think about what the author tells you about the when and where already, then go beyond it.

  • What image are you seeing in your head about where and when this story is taking place?

  • How is the story influenced by where and when the story takes place?

6

I CAN make inferences about the characters’ personalities, the setting, the conflict, etc.

  • First step: IDENTIFY the conflict. What is a problem or challenge the character(s) has to overcome?

  • Second step: PROVIDE text evidence. How do you know this is a problem affecting the character(s)?

  • Third step: What can you infer (assume) about the story because the conflict (problem) happened?

7

Framework

  • I CAN phrase my inferences using clear sentence starters, demonstrating my knowledge of the differences between inferences and predictions.

  • I CAN provide textual evidence that supports the inferences I have made regarding the characters’ personalities, the setting, the conflict, etc.

  • Be clear with your language. What is the text evidence? What is the inference? How are the two connected? Why do you think the inference can be true?

8

I CAN read closely to find answers explicitly in text.

  • This is a 3.0 LEVEL statement. This means that you are expected to answer the question CLEARLY.

  • Explicit questions have a right answer. That is why you must read the text CLOSELY to find it.

  • Specific details help me see your thoughts. I am not a mind reader - show me what is going on in your brain!

9

I CAN use multiple pieces of textual evidence to support both explicit and inferential questions.

  • Multiple = MORE THAN ONE.

  • 4.0 is above and beyond. Use the evidence to SUPPORT your thoughts. Make sure to EXPLAIN your thoughts as well.

4.0 Practice

The next slide has a Pixar short ("Partly Cloudy") you are going to watch. Make sure to take note about the details because you will be expected to recall information to answer questions and make inferences.

**Remember - once you start answering an open-ended question on Quizizz, if you go to a different slide, it will submit your answer. Feel free to watch the video more than once before answering your questions.
