Background Information
Authors use imagery to build a picture for the reader. Using imagery to craft such pictures adds to your readers understanding and enjoyment of your work. Let's take a moment and recall our five senses.

Auditory Imagery
refers to sounds and reminds the reader of common or specific sounds as a point of reference to deepen understanding.

Olfactory Imagery
refers to smell and reminds the reader of common or specific scents as a point of reference to deepen understanding.

Gustatory Imagery
refers to tastes and reminds the reader of common or specific flavors as a point of reference to deepen understanding.

Visual Imagery
refers to sights and allows the reader to visualize the subject, objects or events.

Tactile Imagery
refers to touch and reminds the reader of common or specific textures and temperatures as a point of reference to deepen understanding.

The Sixth Sense
Kinaesthetic imagery is related to movement and reminds the reader of body movement or positions that are familiar or imagined – such as the feeling of flying.
