Mean, Median, Mode

Let's define some words first.

3

Take notes!

4

5

Open Ended

Define in your own words what Mean is.

6

Open Ended

Define in your own words what Median is.

7

Open Ended

Define in your own words what Mode is.

8

Mode

  • Tells us which number occurs most often

  • Find the number that repeats the most in the data set

  • There can be more than one mode if multiple numbers repeat the same number of times

  • There can be no mode if none of the numbers repeat

9

Median

  • The middle number in a data set

  • Order all of the numbers from least to greatest

  • If there is an odd number of numbers, find the middle number

  • If there is an even number of numbers, find the mean of the two middle numbers

  • Example: 1,2,3,4,4,5

  • Median would be 3+4 (7) divide by 2 = 3.5

10

Mean

  • Tells you the central tendency of a data set

  • Also called the average

  • Add together all of the numbers, then divide by the number of numbers

11

Range

  • Tells us how spread out the data is

  • Subtract the smallest number from the largest number

  • Example: 1,3,4,5,5,8

  • Range would be 8-1 = 7
