Talam means

• Tala in indian classical Music is a time measure or rhymthm cycle.

• Tala or time in carnatic music is a series of counts made by wave of hand or tapof the hand on the lap or by using both the hands in a manner of clap.

• Each pulse count is called an Aksharam or kriya .

• interval between each pulses is being equal.

Types Of Talam

there are 7 basic talas in carnatic music, is called suladi Sapta Talas.

Sapta Talams are follows:-

• Dhruva ( 1011)

• Matya (101)

• Rupakam (0 1)

• Jhampa (1u 0 )

• Thriputa (1 0 0)

• Ata (1 1 0 0 )

• Eka (1)

Matra

Matra is a beat.

Laya :-

• Means Tempo / speed

• Tamal have different speeds / tempo.

Types of Laya :-

• There are 5 types of Tempo or Laya .

• Chauka (1 stroke per Beat)

• Vilamba (2 stroke per Beat)

• Madhya (4 stroke per Beat)

• Dhuridha (8 stroke per Beat)

• Adi- Dhuridha (16 stroke per Beat)

• Tempo change but fundamental rhythm does not change.

Aavartana

• one cycle through the rhythm or taala .

Anga / Vibhaga

• Anga of several taal movements (parts ), such as laghu, Drutha, Anudrutam.

sama

• Dancer begins with sama or samapada position , feet facing front , hand kept straight and eye kept still .

• Dancer start her performance while the music strat or begin .

Usi /Off beat (half beat)

• Dancer will start the dance in half of the Matra (beat) is called usi.

• Usi used to cover the stage quickly, spin the stage quickly .

• Its a fast movement.

• some steps are there in Uni adavu and Peri adavu.
