The French and Nationalism

a major change, such as the overthrow of one kind of government in favour of a different kind of government. 

​revolution

a form of government in which the citizens, not a monarch or a dictator, hold the power to govern.  In republics such as the United States and Germany, citizens elect their government.

Republic

an awareness, or internal consciousness, shared by many people.  It may be based on a shared memory of and pride in specific events, which become myths and symbols of belonging.

Collective Consciousness

the name given to a group of middle-class people in France before the French Revolution.  The bourgeoisie included lawyers, teachers, doctors, merchants and manufacturers.

Bourgeoisie

conditions, such as war and poverty, that drive people away from a place.
