Pretérito - Imperfecto

We use preterite and imperfect when we talk in the past tense in Spanish. There are different uses for each one.

Remember, there are only 3 irregular verbs in the imperfect tense.

When do we use IMPERFECT?

• MENTAL, EMOTIONAL, AND PHYSICAL STATES.

• HABITUAL, CONTINUAL, REPETITIVE ACTIONS.

• GENERAL PAST.

• AGE. WEATHER. TELLING TIME

• SETS THE STAGE FOR A STORY (ONCE UPON A TIME…).

• CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE.

• BASIC, SIMPLE DESCRIPTIONS IN THE PAST.

Some catch phrases for IMPERFECT:

• A menudo - often

• A veces - at time

• Cada (día, año,...) - Each day, year...

• Nunca - never

• Siempre - always

• todo el tiempo - all the time

• Cuando era niño/a... - When I was a kid...
