Allusion - indirect references

  • Look for proper nouns; capitalized words are a giveaway.

  • Even if you don't know the full meaning of the allusion, even if you've never seen it before, you know they must be referencing something specific.

  • Mecca, Lady Macbeth, Hufflepuff, Sodom and Gomorrah, crossing the Rubicon, Oedipus, Camelot, Captain Ahab, Mr. Spock, Big Brother

  • If you see a capitalized word you don't recognize, Google it!

Point-of-View

  • 1st Person: narrator is in the story, uses I, me, my, and we

  • 2nd Person: rare - narrators talks about "you," the reader

  • 3rd Person: narrator is outside the story, talks about he, she, they

  • Objective: no thoughts or feelings described

  • Limited: tracks one character's thoughts and feelings

  • Omniscient: describes all characters thoughts and feelings
