crust
“Crust” describes the outermost shell of a terrestrial planet. Earth has three layers: the crust, the mantle, and the core. The crust is made of solid rocks and minerals.Earth's crust is a thin shell on the outside of Earth, accounting for less than 1% of Earth's volume.
8
mantle
The mantle is the mostly-solid bulk of Earth's interior. The mantle lies between Earth's dense, super-heated core and its thin outer layer, the crust. The mantle is about 2,900 kilometers (1,802 miles) thick, and makes up a whopping 84% of Earth's total volume.
9
outer core
The outer core is the third layer of the Earth. It is the only liquid layer, and is mainly made up of the metals iron and nickel, as well as small amounts of other substances. The outer core is responsible for Earth's magnetic field. As Earth spins on its axis, the iron inside the liquid outer core moves around.
10
inner core
The inner core is the very center of the Earth, and the hottest part of the planet. It is a mainly a solid ball with a radius of about 1,220 km (760 mi), according to seismological studies. ... The inner core is more than 5,000 kilometers below the earth's surface.

earthquakes
An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. ... When the stress on the edge overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the earth's crust and cause the shaking that we feel. In California there are two plates - the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate.
